BE STILL, MY SOUL, by ARCHILOCHUS First Line: Heart, my heart, with griefs confounded whence you no deliv'rance find Last Line: Overmuch, but know what ups and downs belong to humankind. Alternate Author Name(s): Archilochos | |||
HEART, my heart, with griefs confounded whence you no deliv'rance find, Up against them! guard yourself and show the foe a gallant breast; Take your stand among the foremost where the spears of battle fly Gallantly. Nor when you conquer make your pleasure manifest, Nor in turn, if you are conquered, lie down in your home and cry. Take your joy when life is joyful, and in sorrow do not mind Overmuch, but know what ups and downs belong to humankind. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CURE FOR AFFLICTIONS by ARCHILOCHUS THE IDEAL GENERAL by ARCHILOCHUS THE POET'S SHIELD by ARCHILOCHUS THE POET'S SPEAR by ARCHILOCHUS THERE IS NOTHING STRANGE by ARCHILOCHUS THE NYMPH COMPLAINING FOR THE DEATH OF HER FAUN [OR, FAWN] by ANDREW MARVELL VALENTINES TO MY MOTHER: 1884 by CHRISTINA GEORGINA ROSSETTI |
