SONNET, by FELIX ARVERS First Line: My soul, my life, a fatal secret own Last Line: Who can that woman be?' and never guess. | |||
MY soul, my life, a fatal secret own-- A deathless love my heart at once o'erthrew: The would is hopeless, and was never shown; And she who dealt it ne'er my anguish knew. Alas! how oft unnoticed near I drew And stood beside her, yet was all alone; And all my earthly days will past have flown And I nought gained, and nothing dared pursue. She in whom God all love and softness blends, Follows her path absorbed, nor comprehends The murmurings of love that round her press. She whom stern duty's voice alone can stir Will say, when read these lines, all full of her, 'Who can that woman be?' And never guess. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MR.
