SUBWAY, by CLARA EXLINE BOCKOVEN First Line: Brother! Last Line: Are nothingless than nothingto each other! Subject(s): Envy; Relationships; Solitude; Loneliness | ||||||||
Brother! (My weak tears blur your face Never seen before) Here in the jostle and roar Of a subway station's crowded space I've glimpsed another Guest of Hell. That black thing on your sleeve Reveals far less Your loneliness And for whom it is you grieve Than your proud eyes tell. My heart cried, "Brother!" Because I, too, Know how lonesome Hell can be. Still, you at least can wait to die; but she, My love, and I (I envy you!) Are nothingless than nothingto each other! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN ABEYANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV IN A VACANT HOUSE by PHILIP LEVINE SUNDAY ALONE IN A FIFTH FLOOR APARTMENT, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS SILENCE LIKE COOL SAND by PAT MORA THE HONEY BEAR by EILEEN MYLES |
