HAPPY WOMEN, by PHOEBE CARY Poet Analysis Poet's Biography First Line: Impatient women, as you wait Last Line: Pray for all lonesome souls to-night! Subject(s): Women's Rights; Feminism | |||
IMPATIENT women, as you wait In cheerful homes to-night, to hear The sound of steps that, soon or late, Shall come as music to your ear; Forget yourselves a little while, And think in pity of the pain Of women who will never smile To hear a coming step again. With babes that in their cradle sleep, Or cling to you in perfect trust; Think of the mothers left to weep, Their babies lying in the dust. And when the step you wait for comes, And all your world is full of light, O women, safe in happy homes, Pray for all lonesome souls to-night! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD HEMATITE HEIRLOOM LIVES ON (MAYBE DECEMBER 1980) by ALICE NOTLEY ON THE BEACH by CLARIBEL ALEGRIA FEMINIST POEM NUMBER ONE by ELIZABETH ALEXANDER HYPOCRITE SWIFT by LOUISE BOGAN FOR A GODCHILD, REGINA, ON THE OCCASION OF HER FIRST LOVE by TOI DERRICOTTE HESTER'S SONG by TOI DERRICOTTE A LEGEND OF THE NORTHLAND by PHOEBE CARY |
