ONE PASSES BY, by GLENN CLAIRMONTE First Line: The forces that control the paths of storms Last Line: To temper their sublime severity | |||
The forces that control the paths of storms Have taken me and hurled me down the ways Where now, with certainty and least delays, I must translate the purpose that performs The laws of destiny for worlds and men. So I have come tonight to meet your lips And pour ambition to your fingertips That there may be unrest where peace has been. The thing is done in spite of me -- believe This strange deception is not consonant With my compassion for your loyalty. Because I soon must break your heart I grieve As winds and rains might, being impotent To temper their sublime severity | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...RESURRECTION UPDATE by JAMES GALVIN MOTHER NIGHT by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON THE NEW APOCRYPHA: BERENICE by EDGAR LEE MASTERS FROM THE WOOLWORTH TOWER by SARA TEASDALE THE SAILOR TO HIS PARROT by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES THE FUNERAL by WALTER JOHN DE LA MARE TO A DOG by JOSEPHINE PRESTON PEABODY ON THE DEATH OF A CAT by CHRISTINA GEORGINA ROSSETTI |
