I HEAR HER SING, by CAROLINE COX First Line: I hear her sing across the years Last Line: "heavenly angels guard thy bed!" Subject(s): Singing & Singers; Songs | |||
I hear her sing across the years, (Pillowing her baby's head,) "Hush, my child, lie still and slumber, Heavenly angels guard thy bed!" It seems to me but yesterday, Her sweet voice, singing low, Found lodgment in a restless heart. The years they come and go; But in a heart thus comforted, Time never can erase The memory of her gentleness, The beauty of her face -- As soft she sang, through twilight hour When truant day had fled -- "Hush, my child! lie still and slumber, Heavenly angels guard thy bed!" When at the last great hour I stand, My feet upon the brink Of that dark stream which may be near, Yes, nearer than I think -- Oh, may I hear that sweet voice still, Banishing fear and dread -- "Hush, my child, lie still and slumber, Heavenly angels guard thy bed!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE APOLLO TRIO by CONRAD AIKEN BAD GIRL SINGING by MARK JARMAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 4 by JAMES JOYCE CHAMBER MUSIC: 5 by JAMES JOYCE CHAMBER MUSIC: 28 by JAMES JOYCE THE SONG OF THE NIGHTINGALE IS LIKE THE SCENT OF SYRINGA by MINA LOY |
