The tide of sounds and voices rolled within our life. Enclosed by pearls of words, our whispered names were but another breath into world's resonance. And yet we spoke . . . although our native tongue so rich and full was barren; questions seemed aimless, answers wanting -- Even so, we spoke -- It was the time when love, still fearful of the coming silence, spread words, unchosen, moving sounds falling between suspence and revelation. At last our struggle ceased and hushed, your hand in mine, we watched the mountain deepen its great shadow. Was it death bringing from the infinite a breath of life? Was it Eternity claiming with outstretched arms your soul? Nay, love had rent the veil . . . and in the stillness was fulfilment. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND VENUS OF THE LOUVRE by EMMA LAZARUS THE ANGEL IN THE HOUSE: BOOK 1.
