THE WELL-DIGGER, by O. E. ENFIELD First Line: I picked up the bible this mornin' Last Line: To keep the system primed and repaired! Subject(s): Bible; Wells | ||||||||
I picked up the Bible this mornin'. I don't know how come me to do it -- Not much thinkin' or carin' at first, Just careless-like a-turnin' through it Till I come to a place in Matthew -- The twenty-fifth chapter, I think, Where it says:"I was thirsty And ye helped me; Gave me some water to drink." And right there I says "Is that how ye figure? Then who's ever given more folks drink Than my ol' time friend, the well-digger? I don't know about sermons and prayers But I do know I'm tellin' ye right, When I say in a practical way He's helped many a cuss in a fight And when he gets there Where the river of life winds down Round through the mountains There'll be room for him there, And some work repairin' the eternal fountains. And -- gosh! that will be Heaven to him In the water just sloshin' around A-findin' and fixin' the trouble And bringin' the water up out of the ground! The Lord and the angels may furnish The everlastin' liquid that's shared -- But they'll need my ol' friend, the well-digger, To keep the system primed and repaired! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ABBA JACOB IN THE WELL by MARILYN NELSON ONCE MORE BREVITY by ROBERT FROST PERSONAL HELICON; FOR MICHAEL LONGLEY by SEAMUS HEANEY THE WELL OF ST.
