She paid small fee to generosity
During her eighty years and more of breath,
And clutches life with grim ferocity,
When faced with the unwonted signs of death.
Her jewelled fingers had the will of steel
That binds the ligaments of lofty towers,
But now, benumbed and gnarled, unfit to feel
Their way through life, they grasp its withered flowers.
