SHADOWY OUTLINE, by HELEN M. FIRTH First Line: She paid small fee to generosity Last Line: Their way through life, they grasp its withered flowers. Subject(s): Old Age | ||||||||
She paid small fee to generosity During her eighty years and more of breath, And clutches life with grim ferocity, When faced with the unwonted signs of death. Her jewelled fingers had the will of steel That binds the ligaments of lofty towers, But now, benumbed and gnarled, unfit to feel Their way through life, they grasp its withered flowers. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...AT EIGHTY I CHANGE MY VIEW by DAVID IGNATOW FAWN'S FOSTER-MOTHER by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE DEER LAY DOWN THEIR BONES by ROBINSON JEFFERS OLD BLACK MEN by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON A WINTER ODE TO THE OLD MEN OF LUMMUS PARK, / MIAMI, FLORIDA by DONALD JUSTICE AFTER A LINE BY JOHN PEALE BISHOP by DONALD JUSTICE TO HER BODY, AGAINST TIME by ROBERT KELLY SONG FROM A COUNTRY FAIR by LEONIE ADAMS DOMESDAY BOOK: AT NICE by EDGAR LEE MASTERS A DIALOGUE BETWEEN TWO SHEPHERDS IN PRAISE OF ASTRAEA by MARY SIDNEY HERBERT ODE FOR A SOCIAL MEETING, WITH SLIGHT ALTERATIONS BY A TEETOTALER by OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES |
