SHEAF OF MEMORIES, by AVIS TURNER FRENCH First Line: I longed to free my heart from broken hopes of olden years Last Line: Though they were part of yesteryears, they helped to make today. Subject(s): Dreams; Memory; Youth; Nightmares | ||||||||
I longed to free my heart from broken hopes of olden years And tender dreams of youth which knew the touch of bitter tears, For they had lain too long within my heart, they lingered there As dead leaves cling upon grey boughs when they are cold and bare. One day when I was brave I opened wide an inner door And trod again the sacred ground where I had gone before. I gathered saddened love into a sheaf, and cast away With doubt and blame and all that made the griefs of yesterday, Then sought a lofty hilltop where the winds were clean and high And watched the sunlight fade, like dreams, across the western sky. I waited for the stars to bring new hope and peace to me, But all the while my heart was sad and lonely as could be, For I had hidden deep within myself, and never knew, That wistful memories of old should mingle with the new. Until like songs they drifted back into my heart to stay: Though they were part of yesteryears, they helped to make today. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VARIATIONS: 14 by CONRAD AIKEN VARIATIONS: 18 by CONRAD AIKEN LIVE IT THROUGH by DAVID IGNATOW A DREAM OF GAMES by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE DREAM OF WAKING by RANDALL JARRELL APOLOGY FOR BAD DREAMS by ROBINSON JEFFERS GIVE YOUR WISH LIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS OCTOBER CAME AGAIN by AVIS TURNER FRENCH |
