TRIVIAL DETAIL, by VIOLET HELEN FRIEDLAENDER First Line: Floating on the water in the a.R.P. Bucket Last Line: Extraordinarily happy. Subject(s): Insects; Ladybirds; Life; War; Bugs; Ladybugs | ||||||||
Floating on the water in the A.R.P. bucket Was a round reddish speck That turned out to be a ladybird. It looked lifeless; But on a whim I dipped a finger into the sun-warmed bucket And extracted the tiny thing. Laying it on a mellow brick in the rockery, I went on down the garden path with the bucket And filled the bird-bath. And just now, on my way back, I stopped to look; And there was the ladybird Bustling about the hot, richly grooved brick, Exploring, interested, totally recovered. I have saved the life of a ladybird! And, as I refilled the bucket For its more sinister purpose, Suddenly, ridiculously, In the midst of crashing continents, I felt for a moment Extraordinarily happy. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TO THE LADY-BIRD by CATHERINE ANNE DORSET TO THE BURNIE BEE by ROBERT SOUTHEY LINES TO A LADY-BIRD by JOHN BYRNE LEICESTER WARREN SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: MINERVA JONES by EDGAR LEE MASTERS TO A DEAD LOVER by LOUISE BOGAN THE INDIAN BURYING GROUND by PHILIP FRENEAU THE SOULS OF THE SLAIN by THOMAS HARDY THE VANITY OF THE WORLD by FRANCIS QUARLES CHRISTMAS CAROL by SARA TEASDALE THE THREE TROOPERS DURING THE PROTECTORATE by GEORGE WALTER THORNBURY |
