THE RUIN, by
First Line: About this place there drifts a sense of peace
Last Line: Their monuments, to crumble and reveal.
Subject(s): Decay; Past; Ruins; Rot; Decadence

About this place there drifts a sense of peace,
Of fulsome days and rosy twilights when,
On cool-cropped lawn, young children found release,
And shouted with the wind against their brows.
Out of the past a fragrant incense darts
Of wood smoke, and a high thin note is set
To merge with dreams. The broken things and hearts
The world forgets, turn silently to dust;
While round about, men pound and build in steel
Their monuments, to crumble and reveal.
