When first I heard the voice of Helen Keller Come from its chasm I was moved as by the voice of the dead Become the living. Now, I have often been moved by the voice of the "living" Speaking, speaking with no knowledge of its essential death, But I had never before heard a voice risen from death. And so sweetly speaking . . . so naturally, as if death Had been nothing. One remembers her as one remembers The hour of hearing great news. Helen Keller is news from God Concerning the god in man. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
