ROSE AND YEW, by JOHN GALSWORTHY Poet's Biography First Line: Love flew by! Young wedding day Last Line: Whose love has cried: adieu! Alternate Author Name(s): Sinjohn, John Subject(s): Love; Transience; Impermanence | ||||||||
LOVE flew by! Young wedding day, Peeping through her veil of dew, Saw him, and her heart went fey -- His wings no shadows threw. Love flew by! Young day was gone, Owls were hooting -- Whoo-to-whoo! Happy wedded lay alone, Who'd vowed that love was true. Love flies by, and drops a rose -- Drops a rose, a sprig of yew! Happy these -- but ah! for those Whose love has cried: Adieu! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FROM THE SPANISH by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON CHAMBER MUSIC: 17 by JAMES JOYCE SOUTHERN GOTHIC by DONALD JUSTICE THE BEACH IN AUGUST by WELDON KEES THE MAN SPLITTING WOOD IN THE DAYBREAK by GALWAY KINNELL THE SEEKONK WOODS by GALWAY KINNELL |
