EMPTY AIR CASTLES, by MARGUERITE GIANELLA First Line: I have closed the doors of my castle Last Line: When love was no more by my side. Subject(s): Castles | ||||||||
I have closed the doors of my castle After I looked inside; It was empty, lone, and dreary, And I cared not there to abide. For no more do my airy fancies come To dance through my castle halls, And no more do my fancied heroes now Hang on my castle walls. Ah, many a time I came with joy To open my castle gate; From a tired day I came to play And there for my love to wait. But now I have no more illusions, No dreams do I dream as of old, And out of my dear dead fancies A story might be told. Ah, many a story might be told Of our dreams and our loves now dead, Of the eyes that were bright with love's true light And the things that were left unsaid. Of the thoughts that our hearts were filled with, Of our loves left unexpressed, Of the hearts once so warm and tender Now gone to eternal rest. I have closed the last door of my castle, As nothing was left inside, And I could not bear to stay long there When love was no more by my side. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FOR THE INVESTITURE by CECIL DAY LEWIS THE ROCK OF CASHEL by AUBREY DE VERE THE HAUNTED PALACE by EDGAR ALLAN POE THE CASTLE BY THE SEA by JOHANN LUDWIG UHLAND ODE TO LUDLOW CASTLE by LUCY AIKEN ON SEEING BLENHEIM CASTLE by LUCY AIKEN AN OLD CASTLE by THOMAS BAILEY ALDRICH THE CASTLE RUINS by WILLIAM BARNES MY HIDING PLACE AND ME by BARBARA BROOKS BIXLEY BUCOLIC COMEDY: THE BEAR by EDITH SITWELL |
