ON LUST FOR GOLD, by AVERY L. GILES First Line: Steam shovel, crane your neck and stuff your craw! Last Line: Then back they run for more, scorning rebirth. Subject(s): Gold; Lust; Sonnet (as Literary Form) | ||||||||
Steam shovel, crane your neck and stuff your craw! Loud symbol of the modern greed for gain, Busy, devouring earth with might and main While humans watch your appetite, with awe; Yet you must have a very tender maw, For once you've swallowed all you can contain, You spew it forth, and then digest with pain A more revolting sight I never saw! Yet men are in their dealings much as you: They seek out all the wealth that they can hold, Devouring it as you devour your earth; Wealth disagrees with them, and forth they spew Their "iron-clad" investitures and gold, Then back they run for more, scorning rebirth. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI |
