EVENTIME, by
First Line: They gather around me at eventime

Subject(s): Absence; Memory; Solitude; Thought; Separation; Isolation; Loneliness; Thinking

They gather around me at eventime,
In the firelight's softening glow:
Dear faces I knew in another clime,
In the country of long ago.

Old friends and old loves, that are long since dead,
Come wandering through the dream-door
Of memory's domain, where my thoughts are led
When the shadows dance on the floor.

Their smiles and caresses, their tears and mirth,
In the same old appealing way,
Content my heart as I sit by the hearth
In the loneliness of today.

And always, my darling, your face appears,
With love in your beautiful eyes,
Though you have been sleeping these many years
Where the winds sing their lullabies.

We whisper together so softly here,
Recalling youth's glamorous hours
When love was the promise that drew us near,
And your lips were sweeter than flowers.

They speak to me and I answer, it seems,
The good people I ought to know;
But they are not real as faces in dreams,
That I see by the ember's glow.
