I SHALL GO BACK, by JULIA DAINGERFIELD GLASS First Line: Cities are lonely, prison-like places to Last Line: I shall never be lonely again. Subject(s): Solitude; Loneliness | |||
Cities are lonely, prison-like places to me: Today my loneliness closed about me and all but strangled me -- gripping at my throat until it swelled and pained; And I knew that I must go home. I must go back to the plains -- Where I can breathe the free air of a hundred miles of space; and where I can see in the distance the rim of mountain -- palely dim, Which borders my world -- And in the foreground the broader line of mesa -- with changing colors, So beautiful and rare. And I shall gaze upon this ethereal mystery, and with my heart and my arms Reach out to that which I know I can never touch, but which, I know, Is infinitely mine. I shall go back to the plains -- where the nights are sweet and still, and the stars hang low to the earth. And I shall commune with the stars. And with my heart near bursting, I shall reach upstretched arms and cry out my thankfulness That I am back home! And I shall lie down under the stars -- and listen for the small noises of small creatures passing in the night. I shall arise with the first notes of the lark: And when I have drunk in the amazing loveliness of the dawn hour, I shall stand -- with my face to the East, To greet my Master: in the rising sun. And I shall walk with my Master through every hour of the coming days; and -- I shall never be lonely again. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN ABEYANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV IN A VACANT HOUSE by PHILIP LEVINE SUNDAY ALONE IN A FIFTH FLOOR APARTMENT, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS SILENCE LIKE COOL SAND by PAT MORA THE HONEY BEAR by EILEEN MYLES DESERT TWILIGHT by JULIA DAINGERFIELD GLASS |
