AN EPIGRAM ON LAURENCE ECHARD'S AND GILBERT BURNET'S HISTORIES, by MATTHEW GREEN Poet's Biography First Line: Gil's history appears to me Last Line: Whose fathers were gil's skeletons. Subject(s): Burnet, Bishop Gilbert (1643-1715); Echard, Rev. Laurence; History; Historians | |||
GIL'S history appears to me Political anatomy, A case of skeletons well done, And malefactors every one. His sharp and strong incision pen Historically cuts up men, And does with lucid skill impart Their inward ails of head and heart. Laurence proceeds another way, And well-dressed figures doth display: His characters are all in flesh, Their hands are fair, their faces fresh; And from his sweetening art derive A better scent than when alive. He wax-work made to please the sons, Whose fathers were Gil's skeletons. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BRITISH COUNTRYSIDE IN PICTURES by JAMES MCMICHAEL THE HISTORY OF MY LIFE by JOHN ASHBERY INITIAL CONDITIONS by MARVIN BELL THE DREAM SONGS: 290 by JOHN BERRYMAN THE EROTICS OF HISTORY by EAVAN BOLAND THEM AND US by LUCILLE CLIFTON ON BARCLAY'S APOLOGY FOR THE QUAKERS by MATTHEW GREEN THE GROTTO; WRITTEN UNDER THE NAME OF PETER DRAKE, A FISHERMAN by MATTHEW GREEN |
