It is pleasant to live in a small house In a big green space and a hill near by; To sit by a small door when evening comes; To listen quietly now to the thrill Of the dark earth; -- to wait, and bye and bye To go inside, and look about, and sleep, -- To hold this slumber close, a sacred thing; To rest and turn and rest again; to have No thought of little noises in the night, -- Only day and its kind remembering. And dawn will come to this small quiet house To lift the dusky garments of the night, And then depart on silver silent feet. Outside a small bird sings and it is day, And all the fields and hills are filled with light. Oh, it is pleasant to have a small house With a friendly gate and an apple tree And a brave stream gurgling beneath a hill. Apples are good for those who come and those Who pass, and each can have a yellow rose, And gather the sage and some of the rue. But all of the time he thinks of the road, Watching for you, my dear, waiting for you. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...EL FLORIDA ROOM by RICHARD BLANCO DESTINATIONS by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN TO THIS HOUSE by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE UPSTAIRS ROOM by WELDON KEES HOME IS SO SAD by PHILIP LARKIN DUTCH INTERIOR by DAVID LEHMAN KEY by EMILY BLANCHE MANN GROBY |
