THE PRAIRIE, by
First Line: What is it that holds me on this prairie unadorned?
Last Line: My soul cried out and found its god.
Subject(s): Prairies; Plains

What is it that holds me on this prairie unadorned?
No enchanted valley breathing purple calm—
No spirit-lifting hilltops steeped in dreams—
No quiet sea whereon to rest my weary eyes;
Not even the lovely shadows of a perfect tree.
Sometimes I hate it for its dull and deadly self
But always in my inmost heart I know what holds me fast,
Once in the ghostly beauty of a lonely, autumn night,
My soul cried out and found its God.
