OUR HERITAGE, by HERMAN H. HANSON First Line: A virgin land in the unknown west Last Line: For dear old delaware! Subject(s): Delaware | ||||||||
A virgin land in the unknown west Marshes wide, by the sea, The forest deep and the rolling hills A rich land waiting free. And out of the east a vessel sails By storms tossed, beating slow, In quest of a haven, home and peace Where primal forests grow. A city builds where the swift stream runs; Forests yield to farms: The pioneers into soldiers turn At the sound of war's alarms. Brave Rodney rides and the "Blue Hen's Chicks" March forth from Dover Green. A state is born on the Delaware, The first of the old thirteen. The years roll by and the golden grain Carpets the peaceful hills, Now orchards bloom where the oak and pine Once shaded forest rills. From out of the past to us come down A heritage most fair. Help us, O God, to guard it well For dear old Delaware! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SONGS OF NEW-SWEDEN: PROLOGUE by ARTHUR PETERSON THE FRESHET: A LEGEND OF THE DELAWARE by ALFRED BILLINGS STREET TO DELAWARE by JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER AT NIGHT; SONNET by AMY LOWELL DOMESDAY BOOK: ELENOR MURRAY by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
