THE SIGNET, by ELIZABETH STANTON HARDY First Line: Within four walls that hold Last Line: Once upon a time. Subject(s): Rooms; Time | ||||||||
Within four walls that hold A cubicle of space, There is personality Vivid as a face. For rooms have a custom Immutable and sure, Of wresting from those within Their lasting signature; It clings, that wraith of substance Permanent as air, -- We feel the hidden impact Of living atmosphere. As one room still knows hunger, Another quite replete Basks before hearth ancestors To warm complacent feet. But some rooms ring a carillon, Singing like a chime, Where love left her autograph, Once upon a time. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ELEVEN EYES: FINAL SECTION by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: COME OCTOBER by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: HOME by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: TIME IS FILLED by LYN HEJINIAN SLOWLY: I FREQUENTLY SLOWLY WISH by LYN HEJINIAN ALL THE DIFFICULT HOURS AND MINUTES by JANE HIRSHFIELD A DAY IS VAST by JANE HIRSHFIELD FROM THIS HEIGHT by TONY HOAGLAND BONNYBELL: THE BUTTERFLY by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
