CONSUMING GOLD, by MILDRED P. HENRY First Line: My trifling finger-tips reach out for gold Last Line: I pale to think of those whom I denied! Subject(s): Gold; Materialism | ||||||||
My trifling finger-tips reach out for gold -- The quiet shatters, not a farthing rolls Upon the path that leads to hungry souls, For many of whom the solemn bells have tolled. My shoulders wince beneath the heavy strain From overflowing bags of coins that shine. Did Midas love his gold as I love mine? I will not give a pence to man or fane. Hush ... through the silence chimes a distant clock; The night has gone, and I have found no rest. I turn in haste to fill my treasure-chest, And hear the warning crow of Peter's cock. There stands before me Christ, the crucified ... I pale to think of those whom I denied! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BELIEVE, BELIEVE by BOB KAUFMAN SERVICE by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON THE GOLDEN AGE by WILLIAM EDMONSTOUNE AYTOUN WEDNESDAY IN Y' HOLY WEEK by JOSEPH BEAUMONT TIS LITTLE I COULD CARE FOR PEARLS by EMILY DICKINSON SING-SONG; A NURSERY RHYME BOOK: 48 by CHRISTINA GEORGINA ROSSETTI |
