YEAR'S INTERLUDE, by PEARL COUNCIL HIATT First Line: The nights grow cool and longer, and the days Last Line: The quiet, deep-toned peace of past septembers. Subject(s): Time | ||||||||
The nights grow cool and longer, and the days, Holding rich fruitfulness, are bright and still. Each hollow is a cup of amber haze; And goldenrod lights up the drabbest hill. The path among the gray birch trees is lost Beneath a drift of citron and pale gold -- Small, fragile leaves that do not wait for frost; That do not linger, growing seared and old. Wise, gentle month, the year's strong passion spent, What beauty of fulfillment you have known; What high serenity and blest content ... Each has a charm, peculiarly its own; Let others make their choice -- my heart remembers The quiet, deep-toned peace of past Septembers. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ELEVEN EYES: FINAL SECTION by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: COME OCTOBER by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: HOME by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: TIME IS FILLED by LYN HEJINIAN SLOWLY: I FREQUENTLY SLOWLY WISH by LYN HEJINIAN ALL THE DIFFICULT HOURS AND MINUTES by JANE HIRSHFIELD A DAY IS VAST by JANE HIRSHFIELD |
