STORMED EAGLE, by JOHN LEE HIGGINS Poet's Biography First Line: The victor's fifes are heard Last Line: And the small gaping beaks. Subject(s): Birds; Eagles; Victory; War | ||||||||
The victor's fifes are heard, The winds of chaos sing: Challenge again, wild bird, Battle with claw and wing: Shrilled from a barren crag The eaglets' cries resound. Low are your wings that drag, Shattered upon the ground. Hungry, your brood will droop, Stiffen with eyes aglaze, If on the earth you stoop With no wings to raise. Flash scimitar in air, Splinter the wind and wheel, Sweep and soar with the hare Dangling upon your steel. Plunder the whistling crane Crouched in the river-mud, Clash with the goose, and stain The leaden clouds with blood. Fly to your hungry ones, Mount to your mournful apse, Climb on your wings of bronze Sheer to the stony caps. Turn at the steepled crest Under the toppling peaks. Hush the clamorous nest And the small gaping beaks. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...I AM YOUR WAITER TONIGHT AND MY NAME IS DIMITRI by ROBERT HASS MITRAILLIATRICE by ERNEST HEMINGWAY RIPARTO D'ASSALTO by ERNEST HEMINGWAY WAR VOYEURS by JUAN FELIPE HERRERA THE DREAM OF WAKING by RANDALL JARRELL THE SURVIVOR AMONG GRAVES by RANDALL JARRELL SO MANY BLOOD-LAKES by ROBINSON JEFFERS COME WITH ME by JOHN LEE HIGGINS |
