JUST AVERAGE, by CONSTANCE ENTWHISTLE HOAR First Line: He reads the paper riding down to work Last Line: Must be the man he dreamed but could not be. | |||
He reads the paper riding down to work; His lunch divides an energetic day; But tantalizing visions often lurk Where columned figures dance and go astray. The legends known in boyhood, dearly loved -- Of pioneering grandsires and their kind -- Grow pale with humdrum years. His hopes are shoved Into a darkened closet of the mind. Though he may jest, the ancient brain and brawn Reddens his blood today. Grinning at Fate He grapples valiantly a glowering dawn, Throws the lugubrious hour to rise elate: Because a prattling child beside his knee, Must be the man he dreamed but could not be. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE OLD HITCHING POST by CONSTANCE ENTWHISTLE HOAR THERE IS NO DEATH by CONSTANCE ENTWHISTLE HOAR CHAMBER MUSIC: 25 by JAMES JOYCE OF JACOPO DEL SELLAIO by EZRA POUND THE VIRGIN MARY TO THE CHILD JESUS by ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING SUMMER MATURES by HELENE JOHNSON ULTIMA THULE: DEDICATION by HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW TO ALFRED TENNYSON, MY GRANDSON by ALFRED TENNYSON WHERE LIES THE LAND by WILLIAM WORDSWORTH |
