Subject(s): Exiles; Prisons & Prisoners; Convicts

HERE night is hideous with lurid flame
And day is blackened with the smoke of strife;
Destruction looms above the vale of life,
While murder grins beneath the mask of fame;
Here shrieking death flies madly forth to maim,
And silent death in ambush lurks to slay;
Amid the insensate fury of the fray,
Forgotten is the magic of her name.

I dream that on some steep and wind-swept height,
Beyond the clamorous terror of these cries,
Far from this world of death and prison bars,
Wrapt in the mighty silence of the night,
Strays Beauty with unfathomable eyes
Amid a wizard-world of wandering stars.
