THE EXILE, by CLAUDE HOUGHTON Poet's Biography First Line: Here night is hideous with lurid flame Last Line: Amid a wizard-world of wandering stars. Subject(s): Exiles; Prisons & Prisoners; Convicts | ||||||||
HERE night is hideous with lurid flame And day is blackened with the smoke of strife; Destruction looms above the vale of life, While murder grins beneath the mask of fame; Here shrieking death flies madly forth to maim, And silent death in ambush lurks to slay; Amid the insensate fury of the fray, Forgotten is the magic of her name. I dream that on some steep and wind-swept height, Beyond the clamorous terror of these cries, Far from this world of death and prison bars, Wrapt in the mighty silence of the night, Strays Beauty with unfathomable eyes Amid a wizard-world of wandering stars. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SECULAR GAMES by RICHARD HOWARD WHAT DID YOU SEE? by FANNY HOWE JULIA TUTWILER STATE PRISON FOR WOMEN by ANDREW HUDGINS BOTHWELL: PART 4 by WILLIAM EDMONSTOUNE AYTOUN BOTHWELL: PART 4 by WILLIAM EDMONSTOUNE AYTOUN WORK IN PROGRESS by CHARLES MARTIN THE SUBCULTURE OF THE WRONGLY ACCUSED by THYLIAS MOSS CHANT D'AUTOMNE by CLAUDE HOUGHTON |
