BELLS FROM OUT OF THE PAST, by JOELLEN INGRAM First Line: In eerie lights beneath the sky Last Line: The mission bells so far away. Subject(s): Past | ||||||||
In eerie lights beneath the sky, At times should winds be riding fast, The ancient bells toll very nigh From out the mist of ages past; And weathered ruins where they lie A Mission contour dimly cast. And yet it were a verity, No idle conjuring of thought, That padres in sincerity And patience toiled until was wrought A fold with strong security For gospel message to be taught. No fantasy could make unreal What evidence would mutely show; Nor imagery the truth conceal Of that which padres made to grow; And God through nature should reveal For man to ponder on and know. There stands the oak more gnarled each year; The pear buds leaf and fruitage too; While gentle slopes yield olive near; As grape enlarges trunk -- huge through; And each loan peace to atmosphere That man has chosen to eschew. These frame a scene of transient cast And in the midst where remnants lay, Of crumbled walls debris holds fast That once were built of molded clay, There toll again from out the past The Mission bells so far away. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FERGUS FALLING by GALWAY KINNELL A TIME PAST by DENISE LEVERTOV LAST THINGS by WILLIAM MEREDITH CHRISTMAS TREE by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS THIS MORNING, GOD by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR |
