OCTOBER IN CONNECTICUT, by LOUISE B. OLMSTEAD JENNINGS First Line: Oh! October the king of the months is here Last Line: King october we love thee, we can't let thee go! Subject(s): Connecticut; October | ||||||||
Oh! October the King of the months is here, The hills in purple and gold appear, His goldenrod scepter he holds on high, And he calls to the breezes that go rollicking by. "Oh! winds tell the world I hold court these days On the sun-kissed hills in the soft purple haze." And his loving subjects haste at his call, For they all rejoice at the voice of King Fall. But Jack-in-the-Pulpit will come no more, For an Indian in scarlet now stands in his door. The trees turn red at the royal will, And the blushing sumacs are on every hill. The sweet fringed gentians from the lowlands near by Come in loveliest blue that vies with the sky, And the asters in purple of every shade Give a royal splendor to hill and glade. The birches and maples in red and yellow Stand brilliant and gorgeous in the sunshine mellow, While the oaks' soft brown sometimes is seen Burnt deepest red in splashes of green. Oh! royal October all purple and gold! Thy wealth and thy glory can never be told! We bow to thy beauty, thy color, thy glow, King October we love thee, we can't let thee go! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FACING INTO IT; FOR LARRY LEVIS by ELEANOR WILNER A VAGABOND SONG by BLISS CARMAN THE SHEPHEARDES CALENDER: OCTOBER by EDMUND SPENSER LATE AUTUMN by WILLIAM ALLINGHAM OCTOBER by MARIE DAVIES WARREN BECKNER OCTOER WOODS by EMMA INGOLD BOST NORTH WIND IN OCTOBER by ROBERT SEYMOUR BRIDGES |
