TO A HERON, by MEREDITH JONES First Line: Gaunt, lonely bird Last Line: Lift wings? Subject(s): Herons | ||||||||
Gaunt, lonely bird, I know your haunts. I, too, search the world for beauty, And find myself at twilight in a wilderness, Haunted by remembered cries, Defiled by ooze; I, too, find my sustenance deep in mud. Alone in black everglades, I cry out with desire to climb To crimson skies; To dye my chilled heart in flame. Why must I always fall, impotent, While you Lift wings? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HERONS IN WINTER IN THE FROZEN MARSH by MARY OLIVER POEM OF THE ONE WORLD by MARY OLIVER THE GREAT BLUE HERON by CAROLYN KIZER |
