CANARIES!, by BELL LAWRASON First Line: Women are like canaries, born and raised in a pleasant cage Last Line: But canaries go with antimacassars! Subject(s): Cages; Canaries; Women | ||||||||
Women are like canaries, born and raised in a pleasant cage, After awhile, they forget that a sky is above them. When chance leaves the door open, they venture a little way out But are afraid to fly; They shrink from the strength of the wind in the coming storms, Nor do they trust their wings. What if the cage door shut! It is their habit to sing. Did the first canary put soul into his music? Now they can be inspired by a sewing machine or carpet sweeper. The sparrows in the dust exude the joy of living, The field lark lifts our eyes to heaven, But canaries go with antimacassars! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ARISTOTLE TO PHYLLIS by JOHN HOLLANDER A WOMAN'S DELUSION by SUSAN HOWE JULIA TUTWILER STATE PRISON FOR WOMEN by ANDREW HUDGINS THE WOMEN ON CYTHAERON by ROBINSON JEFFERS TOMORROW by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD LADIES FOR DINNER, SAIPAN by KENNETH KOCH GOODBYE TO TOLERANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV |
