NIGHT upon her darkling ways
Paused beside your sleepless bed,—
Sleepless till the morning rays,—
Sleepless, for a sudden dread
Of her bosom,—wont to be
Minister of rest to thee.

Pausing, passionate and proud,
Night, a prey to pity deep
Of the tender ingrate, vowed,
"I will die to let thee sleep;"
And, to calm this trembling breath,
Westward fled away to death.
