WAS THIS THE TASK?, by MARIE AUSTIN MAJOR First Line: To hear the wind whistling Last Line: Or that herod might see -- one day? Subject(s): Duty | |||
To hear the wind whistling In the straw-thatched eaves, To watch the ass bristling In the cold, cold sheaves -- To see the stars shooting Their bright, sharp light, And hear the owl hooting In the dead of night -- Pray, was this the task Of a God-King helpless cradled, Who had made, though all poorly stabled, For Herod damask and wine red flask? Was this the task, I pray -- Or that Herod might see -- one day? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEDICINE 2; FOR JOHN MURRAY by CAROLYN KIZER AND THEY OBEY by CARL SANDBURG STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING by ROBERT FROST BY THE RIVERS by SHIRLEY KAUFMAN TO LUCASTA, [ON] GOING TO THE WARS by RICHARD LOVELACE FOR THE UNION DEAD by ROBERT LOWELL PRESCIENCE by MARIE AUSTIN MAJOR THE MOON HAS HER NEST by MARIE AUSTIN MAJOR DOWN BY THE CARIB SEA: 1.
