YOUNG AND OLD, by NICHOLAS MARTIN First Line: Alas! You climb life's glad ascent Last Line: While your young soul expands to light. | |||
ALAS! you climb life's glad ascent, But I descend with brow downcast; Buoyant and blithe you soar content, I weary with the journey past. For you a long, bright future opes To follow your still spotless sky; I am so very poor in hopes, So very rich in memory. Sweet love! in gentle flight descend, And make some loving heart your home; I to the grave my footsteps bend, And the dark shelter of the tomb. Before the sheen of dawning day, Scattered and lost the gloomy night, My last aroma dies away, While your young soul expands to light. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BALLADE OF DEAD FRIENDS by EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON THE SINGER IN THE PRISON by WALT WHITMAN THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF 27 B.C. by FRANKLIN PIERCE ADAMS COWBOY VERSUS BRONCHO by JAMES BARTON ADAMS PROMETHEUS BOUND: PROMETHEUS IN THE EARTHQUAKE by AESCHYLUS THE BUBBLE by WILLIAM ALLINGHAM MYSELF by HARRIET ELLEN (GRANNIS) AREY TO MY FRIEND D'AVENANT, UPON HIS EXCELLENT PLAY, 'THE JUST ITALIAN' by THOMAS CAREW TOWARDS DEMOCRACY: PART 3.
