MARCH, by JEWELL E. MATTHEWS First Line: March is a tender tyrant: he tramples in Last Line: March is a tender tyrant. Subject(s): March (month) | ||||||||
March is a tender tyrant: He tramples in The frightened world to discipline; He breaks an oak tree's stalwart bough, And ruffs a pine tree's priestly brow, And hurls a windy javelin. Samson, strong, is of his kin, Yet kindly is his heart within: He stoops to kiss the iris now; March is a tender tyrant. He gently tilts the tulip's chin, And bluets grow where he has been; He parts the earth just to allow The Easter lilies to take their bow; March is a tender tyrant. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...AND AGAIN, MARCH IS ALMOST HERE by JOHN ASHBERY MARCH: A BIRTHDAY POEM by JOHN UPDIKE MARCH by WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS IN EARLIEST SPRING by WILLIAM DEAN HOWELLS THE SHEPHEARDES CALENDER: MARCH by EDMUND SPENSER TO MY SISTER by WILLIAM WORDSWORTH WRITTEN IN MARCH by WILLIAM WORDSWORTH EVENING SONG OF THE THOUGHTFUL CHILD by KATHERINE MANSFIELD THE FRUIT GARDEN PATH by AMY LOWELL IN THE HOLY NATIVITY [OF OUR LORD GOD]; AS SUNG BY SHEPHERDS by RICHARD CRASHAW |
