"O MY daughter, open the gate!
Someone knocks loud and late!"
"I cannot go and open there,
For at the mirror I smoothe my hair."

"Daughter, open the gate, I say,
A man faints upon the way!"
"I cannot go and look for him yet,
Ribands upon my waist I set."

"Open, O daughter sweet!
I am old, I have dragging feet. . . ."
"I cannot go and watch for him now,
I'm clasping jewels on my brow."

"Perchance the traveller is dead
Out in the cold and wind and dread!"
"If he had been fair I should have guessed:
No thrill has shaken my breast."
