KATE FROM THE WEST, by EVELYN MAY First Line: She was just a girl from way out west Last Line: The boys for her were sure to wait. Subject(s): Cowboys; Singing & Singers; West (u.s.); Southwest; Pacific States | ||||||||
She was just a girl from way out west, Chaps and spurs and cowhide vest, Boots and sox and old blackjack, Allus first on the ranger's rack; Jump astride the old horse back, Ride 'em hard on the ranger's track. She'd ride 'em hard -- she'd ride 'em long, Allus hear her sing this song: TALLIHOE TALLIHOE Good-bye, Bess and good-bye Joe, The old Bar X I'll leave behind; The old cow trail I'm sure to find O my Ginger, don't you fear, I'll soon return with a souvenir. I'll get you a saddle and a bridle, too, And that's about all Old Katie could do. Kate Two-Gun was her only name. Allus first at the shootin' game; Aim 'em straight and no back track, Never stop till she took a whack. The only clock she ever knew Was the coyote howl and cockatoo. From early morn -- till close of day You'd hear her sing and ride away. Kate could cook -- Kate could sew, She could dance the tickletoe: Heel and toe and polka -- O That's the way she'd sing and go. Ropin' steers was just her game, Brandin' calves was all the same. The old corral was home for Kate; The boys for her were sure to wait. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WESTERN WAGONS by STEPHEN VINCENT BENET DRIVING WEST IN 1970 by ROBERT BLY IN THE HELLGATE WIND by MADELINE DEFREES A PERIOD PORTRAIT OF SYMPATHY by EDWARD DORN ASSORTED COMPLIMENTS by EDWARD DORN AT THE COWBOY PANEL by EDWARD DORN AT CASTERBRIDGE FAIR: 5.
