The night the true God lists your every crime And bids you tell the good that you have done, 'Tis like that you may find no words for one Good deed, in silent awe of the sublime. And yet, O sinner, your defence must start If the just fire shall be disavowed. Therefore, having cast aside your shroud, Take in your hands and hold aloft your heart: Your madman's heart, your faun's heart, swollen too With pride; that burns all night, that bleeds all day; Your heart that all love's torments wear away: And the true GodI see it allwill pardon you. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE COMING OF THE PLAGUE by WELDON KEES A LITHUANIAN ELEGY by ROBERT KELLY |
