AS IN A GLASS: 2. SPACE, by CLARA PLATT MEADOWCROFT First Line: I could not reach you and I heard you call Last Line: And there were you -- with your hand reaching out to me. Subject(s): Absence; Separation; Isolation | ||||||||
I could not reach you and I heard you call. There were miles and miles between us: Miles of streets where I used to go carrying bundles Back and forth, back and forth, never settled, between us; Miles of words -- futile attempts at understandings -- Blocking the road, piling up obstacles higher and higher. Once I could leap them, afterward wearily climbing and stumbling To reach your door; And when I finally reached it, The door was bolted against me. I heard you call -- but the miles had lengthened to world's end. I could not reach you nor help you. I turned away, -- And there, there, was your house and your door wide open; And there were you -- with your hand reaching out to me. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE EVENING OF THE MIND by DONALD JUSTICE CHRISTMAS AWAY FROM HOME by JANE KENYON THE PROBLEM by CHARLOTTE FISKE BATES WHEN A WOMAN LOVES A MAN by DAVID LEHMAN THIS UNMENTIONABLE FEELING by DAVID LEHMAN AS IN A GLASS: 1.
