In the olive Orient, Up and down Jerusalem streets He sang his poems. She who lived in Magdala, Fishermen of Galilee, Blind and poor from Jericho, Lepers out of Bethany, Children, scholars, thieves -- What a motley crew Loved the singing Jew! Now the bayonet is there, And the gun -- Maybe on the very corner where they met. And the sun Looks down upon the smoke. Saladin is in the dust, Richard camps on Olivet.
