YOU HELD MY HAND, by MARIA MORAVSKY First Line: The engine stalled just before the dark Last Line: You held my hand. Subject(s): Florida Keys | ||||||||
The engine stalled just before the dark. The black malarial mosquitos began to sing . . . The boat floundered ... shook ... A snag? A shark? The captain said: "Broken piston ring." It meant night on the Keys. Deserted, low, Mangrove tangled, fog swathed, murderous Keys. The wind howled above, the waves hissed below The boat drifted with the treacherous undertow Caught in the sea's relentless snare. I glimpsed alligators' red, fiery stare, And the onrushing shore's sharp, menacing bend . . . I did not care, -- You held my hand. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A PLANTATION BACCHANAL by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON SPECIAL PLEADING by SIDNEY LANIER THE COCK AND THE FOX, OR THE TALE OF THE NUN'S PRIEST by GEOFFREY CHAUCER IN A LECTURE-ROOM by ARTHUR HUGH CLOUGH SONNETS TO LAURA IN LIFE: 109 by PETRARCH |
