LA JEUNESSE N'A QU'UN TEMPS, by HENRI MURGER Poet's Biography First Line: Fanned by twenty summers' sun Last Line: Youth is only of to-day! Subject(s): Friendship; Youth | ||||||||
FANNED by twenty Summers' sun, See, our manhood is begun: Come, to love and laugh essay, Youth is only of to-day! With patience armed Against the woes ahead, Of Courage and of Hope We knead our daily bread. Our mood, the foe to care, (Ah, but our songs are gay!) Makes mirth of dull despair Youth is but of to-day! If she who's dear (Her love a thing of chance!) Should bid the Muse appear, Born of her flaming glance, Hymn her, without a care, Be fickle though she may, What matter, so she's fair? Youth is but of to-day! The fairest things (Love, Beauty, most of all!) Like flow'rs that Summer brings, Survive not Summer's fall: Then now that radiant Spring Gilds all with garb of May, Come, let us laugh, love, sing Youth is but of to-day!
