THE HUDSON, by STARR HOYT NICHOLS First Line: With tranquil majesty our river flows Last Line: As souls melt theirs in death's infinity. Subject(s): Cities; Hudson River; Hudson Valley, New York; Urban Life | ||||||||
With tranquil majesty our river flows From lordly Adirondack Mountains green, Where muskrats slink and otter fish unseen, And antlered stags wait for their lonely does. How swell its waters as it grandly goes By cloudy Catskill through West Point's ravine, Floating rich fleets its sculptured banks between, Toward pillared Palisades past Anthony's Nose! Next laps Manhattan's wharves in light caress, Blent with green Neptune's earth-surrounding streams And dancing by the city's blithesomeness Gives port to navies where the high gull screams; Then sinks its being in the featureless sea, As souls melt theirs in death's infinity. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THINGS (FOR AN INDIAN) TO DO IN NEW YORK (CITY) by SHERMAN ALEXIE THE CITY REVISITED by STEPHEN VINCENT BENET TEN OXHERDING PICTURES: ENTERING THE CITY WITH BLISS-BESTOWING HANDS by LUCILLE CLIFTON THE CITY OF THE OLESHA FRUIT by NORMAN DUBIE DISCOVERING THE PHOTOGRAPH OF LLOYD, EARL, AND PRISCILLA by LYNN EMANUEL MY DIAMOND STUD by ALICE FULTON |
