COMFORT, by EMMA PENROD NORRIS First Line: No, my boy, you are not away Last Line: You are by my side all day, my son. Subject(s): Mothers & Sons | ||||||||
No, my boy, you are not away, You are by my side the livelong day. I feel your touch, I see your face Reflected in everything about the place. I see you as a baby tot; Ah no! I haven't so soon forgot Those years when all hope and joy Seemed to center around my baby boy. Then, so very soon, you were six And off to school, and out to mix With other lads, and to learn the way Of the world, and wonder at new mysteries each day; The while at home I waited and hoped and prayed That from your learning great plans were being laid. Then, in a few short years, or months it seems, You were a big grown-up lad in your teens, Helping at daily tasks, and at night Delving into books, and living with men of might Who gave to the world from their pen The best they had in store, -- and then You dreamed, and longed that you Might do the things you had hoped to do. And now, so soon, your dreams have come true, And your life is fuller and richer and new. But, as you revel in your glories won, You are by my side all day, my son. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE JEWELS AND THE GRACCHI by JOHN HOLLANDER A MOUNTAIN MOTHER by WILLIAM ASPENWALL BRADLEY SONG: EARLY DEATH OF THE MOTHER by GREGORY ORR POEM FOR MY SONS by MINNIE BRUCE PRATT DOORS, DOORS, DOORS: 2.
