GOODBYE, by NORREYS JEPHSON O'CONOR Poet's Biography First Line: Goodbye to tree and tower Last Line: My last goodbye. Subject(s): Farewell; Ireland; Parting; Irish | ||||||||
Goodbye to tree and tower, To meadow, stream, and hill, Beneath the white clouds marshaled close At the wind's will. Goodbye to the gay garden, With prim geraniums pied, And spreading yew trees, old, unchanging Tho' men have died. Goodbye to the New Castle, With granite walls and grey, And rooms where faded greatness still Lingers to-day. To every friend in Mallow, When I am gone afar, These words of ancient Celtic hope, "Peace after war." I would return to Erin When all these wars are by, Live long among her hills before My last goodbye. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE SIGHTSEERS by PAUL MULDOON THE DREAM SONGS: 290 by JOHN BERRYMAN AN IRISH HEADLAND by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE GIANT'S RING: BALLYLESSON, NEAR BELFAST by ROBINSON JEFFERS IRELAND; WRITTEN FOR THE ART AUTOGRAPH DURING IRISH FAMINE by SIDNEY LANIER |
