THE FIRST BLIZZARD, by NOLANNE O'HAIR First Line: The lambs that came last april had no way Last Line: To teach lambs not to be afraid of snow. Subject(s): Snow | ||||||||
The lambs that came last April had no way Of knowing that a sudden snow could change The world familiar to them yesterday Into this dazzling place, grotesquely strange. Backs to the wind, they're huddled near the gate Afraid to follow where the old sheep lead; Whatever holds them there inanimate Is stronger that a driving hunger need. The ewes, again with young, can surely hear Their frightened lambs' low crying; yet they pass Into the pasture, less concerned with fear Than finding what is left of tender grass. It takes a storm or two, come weal or woe, To teach lambs not to be afraid of snow. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BRIGHT SUN AFTER HEAVY SNOW by JANE KENYON SNOW FALLING THROUGH FOG by WILLIAM MATTHEWS THE SNOW FAIRY by CLAUDE MCKAY NOT ONLY ESKIMOS by LISEL MUELLER |
