AWAKENING, by F. C. OLDRIDGE First Line: A nation yawns and stretches Last Line: Gleams upon the brow of canada! Subject(s): Canada; Growth; Canadians | ||||||||
A nation yawns and stretches, And clings supinely to the comfort of sleep. It is the slow awakening. It is the borderland, where dreams mingle with the consciousness, And reality impinges upon unreality Until chaos sounds an alarum. The sun of a new age gleams, the awakening becomes a singing in the heart, And in the morning freshness All the glorious deeds of yesterday Invest the personality with new vigor. A great people are moving into action, Their breast expanded with the new life! A great people stand upright, alert, vital, Singing in the dawn! A beautiful people, Filled with the rich blood of purpose, Stand gloriously astride the forest and the plain, With one hand resting on the mountain peaks And the other stretched in joyous welcome to the sun! The early light of another era Gleams upon the brow of Canada! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CANADA: CASE HISTORY: 1945 by EARL (EARLE) BIRNEY TWO CAMPERS IN CLOUD COUNTRY by SYLVIA PLATH THE VISIONS OF MACKENZIE KING by JOHN UPDIKE AT THE TOURIST CENTER IN BOSTON by MARGARET ATWOOD A CANADIAN BOAT SONG; WRITTEN ON THE RIVER ST.
