REBELS, by GARRETT OPPENHEIM First Line: Always there came the voice, the deep-toned warning Last Line: Bitter and proud, to scrubby lands unknown. | |||
Always there came the Voice, the deep-toned warning: "Of the fruit of the tree that stands in the midst of the garden We shall not eat." "Be home at the stroke of morning!" "Leave the lid closed!" "Ye shall obtain my pardon, If ye will bring me from Hells' King this vial, But do not open it!" "Refrain from battle While these two enemies put their strength to trial." "Breathe not a sound!" "Touch not the sun god's cattle!" But always the lid was lifted and the fruit tasted, Always the cord was loosed, the covenant broken, And always the hard way chosen, and Paradise wasted, And a waste of sound the words the prophet has spoken. Always we cut God from us and walked alone, Bitter and proud, to scrubby lands unknown. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LEDA AND THE SCARECROW by GARRETT OPPENHEIM OIL OF DADA: FIRST LOOK by GARRETT OPPENHEIM THE OLYMPIAN IN AUTUMN by GARRETT OPPENHEIM DOMESDAY BOOK: THE CONVENT by EDGAR LEE MASTERS TWILIGHT by DAVID HERBERT LAWRENCE THE SPIRIT OF SHAKESPEARE: 2 by GEORGE MEREDITH HELIOTROPE by HARRY THURSTON PECK THE WOOD OF FLOWERS by JAMES STEPHENS |
