I LOVE A VILLAGE, by BLANCHE PALMER First Line: I love a little village best Last Line: Till comes the last clear call. Subject(s): Homecoming; Neighbors; Villages | ||||||||
I love a little village best Of any place I know; It holds a charmthe friendliest That brings a real heart-glow. I love to take a walk at night Along its mapled lanes, And see the twinkling eyes of bright Crisp-curtained window panes. Its cozy homes in gardens rest, Caressed by sun and breeze; And robins come to mate and nest In kind green arms of trees. My neighbor, through the garden gate, Comes tripping cheerily, Of village incidents to prate, That happened recently. Or brings a piece of pie, or cake From some new recipe: "I got it from that nice Miss Blake You introduced to me." And then we stroll my garden through And talk of simple things: Of roses, pinks, a pest that's new; Of creatures that wear wings. When I am sad, or blue, or ill, They come with words of cheer Or some small token of good-will And sentiments sincere. I wonder if God, passing by, On His eternal quest For brotherhood, may pause and sigh, "Here I shall stop and rest." I pray that I may never roam Far from my garden wall, Or leave for long my village home Till comes the last clear call. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE HOURS; FOR INGRID ERHARDT, 1951-1971 by NORMAN DUBIE STREETS OF PEARL AND GOLD by CAROLYN KIZER THE LITTLE VILLAGE by ERIC PANKEY VILLAGE IN LATE SUMMER by CARL SANDBURG IN THE BERKSHIRE HILLS by LOUIS UNTERMEYER THE DESERTED VILLAGE by OLIVER GOLDSMITH CITY AND VILLAGE by ALEXANDER ANDERSON YOU HAVE GONE by BLANCHE PALMER |
